PHNOM PENH: During the two-day Chinese New Year celebrations in the third weekend of January 2023, eight people were killed and 47 people were seriously injured in traffic accidents.

According to National Road Traffic Accident data released by the Traffic Police and Public Order Department of the National Police on Saturday, 21 January 2023, three people were killed, 10 were seriously injured, and four had minor injuries, in traffic accidents.

On the first day of the Chinese New Year (Sunday, 22 January), there were five deaths, 26 serious injuries and seven minor injuries caused by traffic accidents. Also according to the report, the accidents were caused by 25 collisions over the weekend.

On Chinese New Year, there were also many cases of house fires, most of them due to a lack of care in lighting incense and burning paper offerings. One house in Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville caught fire due to the burning of incense left unattended. On the same day, a fire broke out at a gas station in Siem Reap province, and a fire also burned down the forest in a abandoned plot of land, caused by burning paper offerings flying in the air.

On Sunday, 22 January, another house in Preah Ponlea village, Sangkat Preah Ponlea, Serey Sophorn city, Banteay Meanchey province was also set on fire, but luckily, no one was injured. At the same time, a fire also burned another house in Sangkat O Bek Kam, Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh, caused by burning incense. That same day, another house in Sangkat Choam Chao I, Khan Por Sen Chey, also caught on fire.
